Featured AI artist: Mario Müller

In this interview, we speak with AI artist, Mario Müller, who began his journey in early 2023, blending design and digital art with cutting-edge generative tools. From experimenting with surreal compositions to refining a signature style through layered techniques, Mario shares his insights on the creative process, the challenges of working with AI models, and what’s next for him in the evolving world of AI art.

How did you get started with AI?

I first started experimenting with AI in early 2023. My background in design and digital art naturally led me to explore AI tools as an extension of my creative process. At first, it was pure curiosity—seeing how AI interprets prompts and generates unexpected results. But I quickly realized its potential for surreal and abstract compositions, which fit well with my artistic vision.

What was the initial process like for you?

At the beginning, I focused on understanding how AI-generated images could be manipulated and controlled. I rarely rely solely on text prompts—I often reinterpret my own images, edit them beforehand, or remix colors and gradients to push creative boundaries.

How did you refine your technique?

I found that newer AI models tend to produce overly clean, predictable results, which is why I often work with MidJourney V5.2. It gives me more unexpected, absurd distortions that align with my style. Over time, I refined my approach by training models with my own work, layering AI-generated elements with manual edits, and exploring how different prompts interact with specific aesthetic choices.

What’s next for you in the realm of AI art?

I see AI as an evolving tool rather than a fixed medium. Right now, I have a lot of work commitments, but I’d love to get back to experimenting with unconventional ways to merge AI with other creative processes—like the AI am Jesus / EAU MY GOD installation – an AI-generated Jesus portrait, poetry, and scent merging into a multi-sensory experience. In the future, I’d like to explore the intersection of AI art and painting or abstract art. I also find the idea of creating objects with a 3D printer very exciting.

Final thoughts

As AI continues to evolve, so too does the creative potential it unlocks for artists like Mario Müller. His ability to blend traditional techniques with generative tools demonstrates how AI can be more than just a medium—it can be a collaborator in the artistic process. Whether exploring surreal compositions, refining his signature style, or experimenting with new intersections of AI and physical art, Mario’s journey is a testament to the boundless possibilities of this technology. As he looks ahead to future projects, one thing is certain—his work will continue to push the limits of what’s possible in AI-driven creativity.
